murphy

have you ever been in the situation when the bus you are waiting for takes forever to come, yet all the other buses keep on coming? or perhaps when you drop something small onto the floor it HAS to fall and roll into the hardest to reach places? or when bad hair days just have to happen on days you meet important people... oh well... whose to blame?? there's only one person...

murphy...

for those who are not famliliar with murphy's law... here's a short summary of how it all started...

origin of murphy's law

Murphy's Law ("If anything can go wrong, it will") was born at Edwards Air Force Base in 1949 at North Base.
It was named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an engineer working on Air Force Project MX981, (a project) designed to see how much sudden deceleration a person can stand in a crash.
One day, after finding that a transducer was wired wrong, he cursed the technician responsible and said, "If there is any way to do it wrong, he'll find it."
The contractor's project manager kept a list of "laws" and added this one, which he called Murphy's Law.
Actually, what he did was take an old law that had been around for years in a more basic form and give it a name.
Shortly afterwards, the Air Force doctor (Dr. John Paul Stapp) who rode a sled on the deceleration track to a stop, pulling 40 Gs, gave a press conference. He said that their good safety record on the project was due to a firm belief in Murphy's Law and in the necessity to try and circumvent it.
Aerospace manufacturers picked it up and used it widely in their ads during the next few months, and soon it was being quoted in many news and magazine articles. Murphy's Law was born.

so here is the famous murphy's law, and some other laws that came bundled with it!!

If anything can go wrong, it will

If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong

If anything just cannot go wrong, it will anyway

If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which something can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop

Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something

Matter will be damaged in direct proportion to its value

Whenever you set out to do something, something else must be done first

Every solution breeds new problems

No matter how perfect things are made to appear,
Murphy's law will take effect and screw it up!!!!!!!!

so... if you ever feel like its the worse day of your life and nothing can get better, only worse... dun have to worry... you are bounded by law!! you cant help it!!! hahaha...

treasures

okok... i know people getting bored at my blog, seeing that there's no updates... but i want to say something also... YOU ALL NEVER UPDATE ALSO WAT...!!!...
well anyways...
this is a story shared to me by a friend thru email... and i would like to share it with everyone...

STORY OF A CAB RIDE

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living.
When I arrived at 2:30a.m.,the building was dark
except for a single light in a ground floor window.
Under these circumstances, many drivers would just
honk once or twice,wait a minute, then drive away.
But, I had seen too many impoverished people who
depended on taxis as their only means of
transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger,
I always went to the door.

This passenger might be someone who needs my
assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the
door and knocked.

"Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I
could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in
her 80's stood before me. She was wearing a print
dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like
somebody out of a 1940's movie. By her side was a
small nylon suitcase.

The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for
years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.
There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or
utensils on the counters. In the corner was a
cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I
took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist
the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward
the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's
nothing", I told her. "I just try to treat my
passengers the way I would want my mother treated"
"Oh, you're such a good boy", she said. When we got
in the cab, she gave me an address, then
asked, "Could you drive through downtown?" "It's not
the shortest way," I answered quickly. "Oh, I
don't mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on
my way to a hospice". I looked in the rear-view
mirror. Her eyes were glistening. "I don't have any
family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't
have very long." I quietly reached over and shut off
the meter. "What route would you like me to take?" I
asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She
showed me the building where she had once worked as an
elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood
where she and her husband had lived when they were
newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture
warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had
gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to
slow in front of a particular building or corner and
would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she
suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in
silence to the address she had given me.
It was a low building, like a small convalescent home,
with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two
orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up.

They were solicitous and intent, watching her every
move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the
trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The
woman was already seated in a wheelchair. "How much do
I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.
"Nothing," I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered.
"There are other passengers," I responded.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.
She held onto me tightly. "You gave an old woman a
little moment of joy," she said. "Thank you." I
squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning
light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the
closing of a life. I didn't pick up any more
passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in
thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly
talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver,
or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I
had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then
driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I
have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve
around great moments. But great moments often catch us
unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may
consider a small one.

five things God won't ask:

1...God won't ask what kind of car you drove,
He'll ask how many people you drove who didn't have transportation.

2...God won't ask the square footage of your house,
He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.

3...God won't ask what your highest salary was,
He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

4...God won't ask how many friends you had,
He'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend.

5...God won't ask why it took you so long to seek salvation,
He'll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven, and not to the gates of Hell.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21

leap(years)

Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November;
All the rest have thirty-one
Save February, she alone
Hath eight days and a score
Til leap year gives her one day more.

have you ever wondered why there are leap years?? or how does it come about?? why do we need it?? when do leap years occur?? here's why......

im sure most of you know what is a leap year... a leap year is a year whereby february has 29 days instead of 28 days... (and i know of people born on 29th feb... poor things..) so why is there a need for such an addition every four years??

the simple reason is this... all of us know that in one year we have 365 days... which means 365 days is needed for the earth to make one complete round around the sun... but in actual fact, it takes the earth 365.2422 days to complete one orbit around the sun.. hence, 1 year is almost 365 1/4 days.. since we follow the gregorian calender of 365 days, it means that every year we count approximately 1/4 day shorter... hence... every 4 years, we have to put back 1 day in february... TADA!!

but wait...!!! people will then ask, 365.2422 days is not equals to 365 1/4 days... there is a small difference of 0.0078 days.. but isnt the difference so insignificant?? though its small its not!! because in 125 years time, this signifance could add up to almost a day.. hence every 100 years, it is not a leap year... but every 400 years it is... so as to make up for the small difference... which we would still lose a few seconds a year.. if at this point you are really confused, just follow these rules of application...

1. every year divisible by 4 is a leap year (1968, 1972, 1984)
2. but every year divisible by 100 is NOT a leap year (1700, 1800, 1900)
3. unless the year is divisible by 400 then its still a leap year (1600, 2000, 2400)

so is there a perfect calender??? the answer is no... even if we can calculate a calender according to 365.2422 days a year, it still will not be perfectly accurate because the orbit of the earth around the sun is also influenced by other planets... well... nothing is perfect anyway... except God's love...

so now you know... =]

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years...
Genesis 1:14

twister

im sure by now all of us have heard of the famous hurricane katrina... wrecking havoc along the coasts of the united states... and im sure all of us have different pictures of a hurricane in our minds... swirling winds tearing the ground apart and eveything with it; heavy rain pouring down conitnuously for days... so why in the world is katrina called a hurricane?? why not cyclone katrina? typhoon katrina? tornado katrina?... wats the difference between all these entities?

some people say they are the same... yet others claim that they are not... is the only difference between them just the spelling or is it something else... well.. time for the truth to be revealed...

* * * * *

hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons are the same thing in terms of its physical nature... all are clasified under tropical storms... and tropical storms are always formed over the sea and have a large span of over a few hundred kilometres... these storms also last quite a while... the only difference lies in where they are found, and thats why the difference in names...

hurricanes take place over the atlantic ocean... their label is taken from the spanish word huracan, which was the name of a native caribbean storm god...

typhoons occur over the pacific ocean... the word is derived from any of the following: tufao, portuguese; tai fung, mandrin; or taifu, japanese.

cyclones form out in the indian ocean... the name is derived from cyklos, the greek word for circle...

last but not least, tornadoes come into the picture... tornadoes are created and occur over land... they are created from a single thunderstorm and range up to only a few hundred metres... they usually don't last long due to the lost of energy to the land surface...

and here's a fun fact... storm winds move clockwise in the southen hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the northen hemisphere... but its not as if anyone caught in a storm will really care...

so there you have it... finally you know...

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

L.O.V.E

in a book "The Four Loves" written by famous writer C. S. Lewis, he writes that there are 4 kinds of love: affection, friendship, erotic love and charity.

so what IS love?? there has been so many definition of it... yet not always defined, but rather people say that it is feeling of some sort that is "more than words" can explain... but some claim that it is just a theory to explain the actions people do... and of course there are people who do all sorts of things in the name of "love"... but wat is LOVE???

i myself believe that there is no real meaning and no words can correctly describe the exact meaning and wat it represents... therefore...... . . . .....

here is a chance to share with everyone what YOUR definition of LOVE is... you can add your comments into this entry, or tag your comments in, something like:

~~~~~LOVE is..... . . . . . . . . . . . . blah blah.... . . (name)~~~~~
feel free to come forward and share!...
well for me... i would definitely have to say:
"God is love, therefore love is also God... to love is to love as Jesus did... unconditional... impossible to do... but we can at least try."
God is love. Whoever lives in God, and God in him... ...There is no fear in love.
knuckles
ever wondered why our knuckles "crack"?? WHY AH?? or why some people JUST have to crack it otherwise it becomes uncomfortable?? YALOR... and do cracking your knuckles lead to future health problems like bone deformation or osteoarthritis?? EEWWW...
wonder no more... here's why... =]
what is knuckle cracking? the mechanism by which clicking noises can be produced by extreme pulling, twisting, flexion, or extension of joints is well established... when a joint is deformed in this way, the pressure in the joint space decreased, and a CO2 filled cavity forms in the synovial fluid... the pressure in the cavity is lower than that in the surrounding fluid, so the fluid quickly rushes into the cavity... this sudden implosion of the cavity is thought to be what causes the distasteful cracking sound...
KABOOOOM = CRACK CRACK
interestingly, tiny bubbles of CO2 remain in the synovial fluid, taking about 15 minutes to be reabsorbed... this explains why a knuckle cannot be recracked immediately... THANK GOODNESS...
since there are gas bubbles in the fluid around the knuckle joints, these can cause slight discomfort, hence this problem can be relieved by 'cracking'... =] many other joints can exhibit similar behaviour... this isn't so much a habit but more of relieving a minor irritation, much like scratching an itch.
but is the repeated implosion of tiny CO2 bubbles enough to cause microtrauma of the kind linked to osteoarthritis? the energy of the cracking sound has been estimated to be 0.07 mJ/mm,3 while the energy required to cause cartilage damage by chondrocyte death is probably around 1.0 mJ/mm.3... this biomechanical analysis suggests that cracking would not be sufficient to cause damage.
phew... thank goodness...
rain
How are lightning and thunder produced?
Because it is very turbulent inside a cumulonimbus cloud, the water droplets and ice crystals in it will break up and become electrically charged. Generally speaking, the upper portion of the cloud is positively charged, while the middle and lower portions are negatively charged. When the electric voltage between the positive and negative charges is large enough, discharges take place between clouds or between cloud and the earth's surface, and lightning is said to have occurred. The electric current in a lightning discharge generates a large amount of heat. This causes a very rapid expansion of the local air, resulting in rumbles of thunder.
Distribution of positive and negative charges inside a cumulonimbus cloud
Thunderstorms are sometimes preceded or accompanied by heavy rain and squalls. These arise when the water droplets in the cumulonimbus cloud can no longer be supported by the underlying air and fall down as rain. The downward rushing air produces squalls.
How to estimate the distance of a thunderstorm?
Lightning and thunder practically occur at the same time. However, because light travels much faster than sound, people always see lightning before hearing thunder. The distance of the thunderstorm may be roughly estimated by the time difference between the flash and the thunder. As a rule of thumb, if the sound of thunder reaches an observer three seconds after a lightning flash, the thunderstorm is about 1 kilometre away.
The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.
