isotonic

here's a quick trivia...

why are isotonic drinks not salty?

people always say that we must drink isotonic drinks after a heavy workout to replenish our salt loss... but do you ever wonder why its not salty? could it be that the salt content is very little as compared to the sugar in it? lets first take a look at definitions:

ISOTONIC - an isotonic cellular environment occurs when an equal solute concentration exists inside and outside the cell...

now lets take a look at this short article:

Isotonic drinks

Athletes prefer isotonic drinks over water because they contain a small amount of carbohydrate (less than 8%) and sodium. It’s the sodium that really makes a difference when it comes to dehydration, but why?

The absorption of water by the body is absolutely dependent on absorption of solutes, particularly sodium. Isotonic drinks have the same concentration of sodium as blood plasma. This small amount of sodium helps promote absorption of fluid in the small intestine, reduces the sodium lost through sweating and also decreases the amount of water excreted.

alright... now we know why... for those who don't understand a single word up there... here's the main points...

1. it promotes absorption of fluids
2. it decreases water loss as well as sodium loss from body

remember that the next time you go for a marathon!
